The South Sudan Red Cross says it has started evacuating hundreds of people affected by floods in Fangak State.

Heavy rains that started last month in the area have destroyed property and left some residents homeless.

Fangak State Director of Red Cross, David Gai Deer, says volunteers are helping more than 700 households who have been affected by the floods in Old Fangak.

He says they are being evacuated to higher grounds.

Fangak’s Health Minister John Deng said the floods have led to outbreak of diseases among the affected people.

“The situations…is very bad because lots of sicknesses are there; our people there need assistance,” Mr Deng told Eye Radio.

He said diseases such as Kalazar, typhoid, and Malaria have been recorded in the area.

Yearly, Fangak is affected by floods during the rainy season.
