US pushes for sanctions against S Sudan leaders

The United States has presented a draft resolution to the United Nations on imposing sanctions against South Sudan.

Under the resolution, the Security Council could impose targeted global travel ban and asset freeze on individuals who are threatening stability of the country.

However, the government says the UNSC should wait for the deadline given to the warring parties to achieve peace before imposing any sanctions.

“There is a timeframe set by the international community and the IGAD to achieve peace which is in March. So, until that time elapses, then we can be able to say ok, now we have reached the time and we have to face the consequences,” said Amb Mawien Makol, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Regional negotiators have now set a deadline of March 5 for President Kiir and Dr Riek Machar to reach a final peace deal that includes a transitional unity government.

But UN peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous has told the 15-member council that prospects for a breakthrough were dim.

“The likelihood that either side could soften its stance remains low,” Ladsous said.
