A survey by the Community Empowerment for Progress has found that the public appreciates the role of police in providing security during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The report says there was a strong directive from police and army leaders to private officers to respect human rights.

CEPO says it deployed 20 observers to each state capital to monitor police performance and filled questionnaires for the survey.

In Juba, the report says that the mobile police unit 777 has made it easy for people to communicate with the police effectively.

The survey has recommended proper naming of roads so that the police can easily be directed to scenes of crimes.

However, CEPO also observed anomalies in the security service. It said people dressed up in uniforms committed crimes.

“Some private police and army officers were involved in conducting looting and robbery of citizens during house to houses search for weapons,” read the report.

“Police under influence of alcohol and some who are criminal-minded got engaged in looting     and robbery either during night hours or during house-to-house search for arms in Juba and other parts of the country.”
