President Salva Kiir on Thursday arrived in Arusha, Tanzania to participate in the East African Heads of State Summit.
The summit under the theme “Accelerating Economic Recovery through Climate Action and Enhancing Food Security for Improved Livelihoods” will witness President Kiir assuming the chairmanship of the East Africa Community today Friday, November 24, 2023.
He is taking the leadership from his Burundian counterpart, President Evariste Ndayhimiye whose tenure has come to an end.
Presidential Press Secretary Lily Adhieu Martin says President Kiir’s nomination as the Chair of the EAC Head of State Summit signifies South Sudan’s commitment to deepening regional integration.
South Sudan officially joined EAC on April 16 2016 and it will be the first time President Kiir will take the mantle of the regional bloc.
