The police authority in Lakes State said Sunday that the state has witnessed a peaceful Christmas this year after registering no single crimes compared to last year.

This is according to the state police commissioner, Major General James Madut.

Madut said the lack of crimes was due to awareness carried out by the government and stakeholders in the state.

“The state witnessed calm and peaceful Christmas this year, and better than last year. No friction occurred between the police and the citizens, like last year the contrary, but they started helping the government in establishing security,” said Madut.

He says this awareness led to the positive participation of citizens in the stability of the security situation.

He only added that they arrested five policemen for defying orders by roaming around with weapons.

“We did not receive any complaints up to now and I returned home at 5 this morning. the only problem is that I arrested five soldiers for violating the instructions not to leave the place of service and to roam with weapons in the city,” he said.

The state governor, Rin Tueny Mabor has been commended for restoring security in the state, which was previously plagued by inter-communal violence.

Tueny had launched a crackdown on highway robberies, inter-communal violence and banditry which led to the arrest of a number of suspects.

The UN Mission in South Sudan reports that revenge attacks and cattle-related killings remain the biggest insecurity incidents after political violence subsided in the country following the signing of the revitalized peace agreement.
