The IGAD chief mediator for South Sudan Peace process says the next round of the talks may resume in four weeks’ time.

On Thursday the two leaders, President Salva Kiir and the leader of the SPLM-SPLA In Opposition, failed to resolve the contentious issues in the agreement in accordance with the initial deadline set by the mediators.

On Friday, the IGAD envoys for South Sudan peace talks adjourned the negotiations indefinably.

In an exclusive statement to Eye Radio, Ambassador, Seyoum Mesfin says the next round of talks will have a different mechanism.

He says the two leaders, President Salva Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar will be forced to sign an agreement if they don’t make the necessary compromises.

Amb Mesfin says the peace talks were adjourned to enable the mediators put the necessary mechanism in place, and that the process may take three to four weeks then the negotiations can resume.

“The situation demands a new dynamism, a new change of approach and a change of paradigm shift in thinking to assist South Sudan,” he said.

In his message to the people of South Sudan following the adjournment of the talks on Friday, Ethiopian Prime Minister and the chairman of IGAD Assembly, Hailemariam Desalegn, said IGAD and other partners will hold the Parties to their commitment to form a transitional government by July this year.

He said in order to achieve that goal, IGAD, joined by the friends of South Sudan from Africa and abroad, intends to implement a common plan and table a reasonable and comprehensive solution to end the crisis in South Sudan.
