I have mixed feelings about the appointment of President Salva Kiir as the Chairman of regional trade bloc – East African Community (EAC).

First, I recognize his experience and leadership as the President of South Sudan, and this could potentially bring valuable insights to the country and the regional organization.

Additionally, his involvement in peace negotiations and conflict resolution efforts in Sudan could be beneficial in mediating disputes and promoting stability within the EAC.

However, I am also deeply concerned about the internal challenges that South Sudan has faced under President Kiir’s leadership.

The country has been plagued by political instability, internal conflicts, and allegations of human rights abuses.

It is crucial that President Kiir must use his appointment as EAC Chairperson to address these pressing issues in our country that has been missing leadership since formation of Government of South Sudan in 2006.

Firstly, he must prioritize the rule of law and governance issues in South Sudan. This means ensuring that the principles of justice, accountability, and transparency are upheld.

It is essential to strengthen the institutions responsible for enforcing the rule of law and promoting good governance, as this will contribute to stability and development in our nation to be in line with the objectives of EAC.

Secondly, President Kiir must use his position to advocate for human rights in South Sudan. This includes addressing the allegations of human rights abuses and violations and taking concrete steps to protect the rights and dignity of all citizens.

By promoting and protecting human rights, Kiir must build a society that respects the fundamental freedoms and values that are essential for peace and prosperity.

Lastly, security sector reforms must be a priority for President Kiir. The security forces in South Sudan must be professional, accountable, and respectful of human rights.

By reforming the security sector, the president can contribute to a safer and more secure environment for all South Sudanese and International investors can come to South Sudan to invest.

On balance, while I acknowledge the potential benefits of President Salva Kiir’s appointment as the Chairman of the EAC, I urge him to use this position to address the internal problems in South Sudan.

It is crucial that he focuses on rule of law and governance issues, human rights concerns, and security sector reforms in the best interests of our country and its people.

By doing so, President Kiir can help pave the way for a more peaceful, just, and prosperous South Sudan.
