United States President Barack Obama has appealed to South Sudanese leaders to pursue peace as a way to honor those who have died in the current conflict.

The United Nations says the one year violence has left thousands of people dead and more than 1. 8 million displaced.

In a statement, President Barak Obama says South Sudanese leaders should recall the promises of the struggle for independence and end the conflict.

“I appeal to the leaders of South Sudan to pursue peace as a way to honor those who have died. It is in your hands to end the cycle of violence, to set forth on a course of reform and reconciliation, and to hold to account those responsible for atrocities,” read the statement

Mr. Obama urges the warring leaders to renew the spirit of hope and unity that enabled the South Sudanese people to come together and vote for their own country in 2011.

“The United States will remain a friend to those who seek peace and progress, and will stand with the people of South Sudan.”

He calls for reforms, reconciliation and accountability for those responsible for atrocities.

Barack Obama released the statement ahead of the first anniversary of the current conflict.
