North & South sign agreement on transport

The under Secretary in the ministry of transport says an agreement has been signed with the Sudan to open air, water, railway and road transport between the two countries.

Captain David Martin said that the Juba and Khartoum governments will start implementing the agreement soon.

The Under Secretary says a timetable has been drawn to open all the means of transport between the two countries.

He said that a technical committee from both countries will start implementing the agreement within 3 weeks.

Captain Martin, who was a member of a delegation that visited Khartoum last week, said the agreement was a follow up to the previous cooperation agreements.

“We discussed lengthily on the river transport, land transport, air transport, roads and bridges and see port. Six items we discussed and we reached an agreement. We have a timetable for implementation.” He said.

The state minister of Information Western in Bhar el Ghazal state, Derik Uya Alfred, says that the agreement will enable the Border States to exchange goods.

He says that this agreement will normalize and balance the market prices in South Sudan.

“We are actually bordering Sudan from the other side of Darfur again, we are also benefiting from the corridor which is coming through northern Bhar el Ghazal, most of the commodities fuel and other food commodities are coming through these corridors. It is contributing into normalizing and balancing the market princes so it is sometime that both countries will benefit from.” He said.

The Upper Nile state chairman of Chamber of Commerce, Matai Ruei, says the agreement will be a big achievement if it is implemented.

He says the agreement will open up market for traders, and goods for the citizens of both countries.

Captain David says the agreement is aimed at strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries.
