People will be rewarded with cash when they report cases of guinea worm, an official from the ministry of health in Northern Bahr el Ghazal has said.

People can be infected by guinea worm by drinking dirty or stagnant water.

“We have arranged for a cash reward of 250 South Sudanese pounds for those who will report the disease and for those who will report to be treated in any hospital within the state,” said Deng Deng, the health surveillance department director.

The surveillance department which monitors guinea worm disease in NBG says the ministry of health has organized a one-day workshop for 15 health workers in Aweil East County.

The workshop will enable workers to help control and treat those affected by the disease.

“By training health workers in Aweil East County, we aim to control and prevent the transmission of guinea worm disease among people in the community.”

Deng added that they hope to control guinea worm disease by next year.
