Demonstrators marched the streets of New York in the United States yesterday to raise their concerns over the humanitarian situation in South Sudan.

The demonstrators, who carried placards, protested in front of the South Sudan Embassy in New York -calling for reconciliation and an end to the conflict.

The group also demonstrated in front of the United Nations building, demanding an end to human rights abuses in South Sudan.

Simon Deng, who is a South Sudanese living in the United States, said the protest is to inform the international community on the need to urgently address the crisis in the country.

“We’re calling on the United Nations to put more efforts to bring an end to the conflict which is going on in South Sudan; the conflict which already took thousands of lives, the conflict which has led millions of South Sudanese to become refugees, the conflict which is making millions to starve to death in South Sudan –according to the United Nations in South Sudan,” said Mr Deng.

An American radio personality and activist, Joe Madison, who was among the demonstrators called on the U.S and the UN to put more efforts to end the conflict.

“I know we are focused on the Ukraine, but right now, there are more people dying in South Sudan than in the Ukraine,” he said. “There are tens of thousands who have died.”

According to China Central Television, the police arrested three of the demonstrators yesterday.

Last week, U.S President Barack Obama signed an executive order -clearing the way for possible sanctions against individuals believed to be obstructing the peace process in South Sudan.
