Author : | Published: Tuesday, May 21, 2013

A South Sudanese lawyer is calling for tougher punishments for rapists, including the death sentence.

The call comes days after a ten-year old girl was raped by a 52-year old man in Juba’s Munuki area. The little girl died 2 days later from injuries the assailant inflicted on her.

Article 247 of the Penal Code Act of 2008 must be amended and replaced with capital punishment, Mut Turuk Mut Speaking to Eye Radio:

“We want the law that is up to date and we must have the law that gives strong protection to the vulnerable groups.”

The law in South Sudan punishes a rapist with up to 14 years’ imprisonment.
