Lakes youth to help security arrest the accused

Author : | Published: Tuesday, February 23, 2016

Youth in Rumbek East County in the former Lakes State have agreed to handover to the state government those accused of killings in the previous conflicts.

They reached the consensus at a peace conference in the town this week.

The former chairperson for Constituency Development Fund, Chol Kuotwel, says they arrested people involved in fighting between payams of Rumbek East County.

He says the youth in the area have formed a committee at the county level to oversee the implementation of the resolutions to conflicts there.

Mr Chol told Eye Radio that those who violate the agreed resolutions will be taken to the local government for punishment.

Communal violence in the area is a common phenomenon. Last year, national MPs reported that at least 500 civilians were killed in 2014 alone.

The incidents were triggered by revenge killing and cattle raids.
