At least three people were killed and 100 others injured in clashes between IDPs in the UN camp in Juba over the weekend.

The UNMISS Spokesperson Joseph Contreras told Eye Radio that the cause of the fight is not clear, but may have been a disagreement between two families.

“Our figures indicate that at least three people died in the fighting and about a hundred were injured,” Mr Contreras confirmed.

“We are still looking into what appears to be a domestic dispute between two families that escalated into a more widespread clashes.

“We are investigating the incident, and we have bolstered our security measures.”

Mr. Contreras said UNMISS is strengthening security around the site avoid further similar occurrences in future.

At a press briefing after a meeting with the President, the South Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission said five people were killed in the incident.

However, some of the IDPs who were in the camp say more than 15 people were killed in the fighting.

They spoke to Eye Radio in Manga-teen area in Juba, where they relocated to after the clashes erupted inside the UN camp.

“Fighting is still between men. Men are very sick, some of them are here and some are in Juba teaching hospital,” said an angry woman.

“Some people were killed in yesterday fighting. 15 were killed yesterday and today 5 were killed.”

The police say it has no figures about the extent of the fighting.

Police spokesman Col Monday Enoka told Eye radio that his ministry is yet to receive a report from UNMISS.

Officials from the national and the Unity State visited the IDPs in Mangateen this afternoon.

“Youths from Mayendit County and youths from Mayom County, Bull group attacked each other and the number of people was wounded in that incident,” Peter Makuth Unity State Minister of Information.

“There is some loss of life but many people were wounded. And that was the reason for these people to come out of the camp.”

More than 500 IDPS were at Manga-teen this afternoon.
