Jonglei Commissioner: latest on weekend attacks

Latest reports on the number of people who were killed during an attack in Twic East County of Jonglei state over the weekend give the number as 78.

“We went to Pakeer and Maar and the final figures that we found is 78 killed and 88 wounded, and 43 houses burnt. Around ten people are still missing. Among the killed were nine women and six children, and 24 children abducted.” the county Commissioner, Dau Akoi Jurkuc, told Eye Radio.

Commissioner Dau Akoi also said there are reports of the continuing presence of unknown armed men in the areas.

“The community is really still living in fear and panic,” he said.  The whole night people are moving, they want t to run away because they said the enemy is still around. Last night people were still in fear because there is no army, and there is no army intervention at the moment.”

Commissioner Akoi also said that over two thousand heads of cattle were stolen by the attackers.

Yesterday, the SPLA said it is currently unable to reach those areas of Jonglei due to bad road conditions.

The army spokesperson said, floods and lack of mobility logistics is affecting the army’s ability to provide security to the people in Jonglei state
