The Chairman of the SPLM- DC says IGAD mediators have no justification to convince the United Nations Security Council to impose sanctions on South Sudan.

Last week, the former Minister of Justice, John Luk Jok, said during their meeting with the mediators, they were told IGAD Chief Mediator, Seyum Mesfin would travel to New York.

He said Ambassador Seyum will submit a report on the peace process in South Sudan.

Mr. Jok said he expects the diplomat to consider imposing travel bans, asset freezes, arm embargoes or other types of punitive sanctions on some individuals from the warring parties.

He said the imposition of these sanctions would depend on the report to be submitted by IGAD Chief Mediator, Seyum Mesfin.

However, in an exclusive statement to Eye Radio, Dr. Lam Akol, says what is urgent is that IGAD helps the parties bring lasting peace to South Sudan.

“There is no any confirmation or justification for that he is going to impose sanctions on South Sudan. The African Union are consulting with IGAD. IGAD is part of the African Union,” said Dr Akol.

“If there is any recommendation, it will be from African Union.”

Early last month, the United States imposed asset freezes against two army generals one from the government and one from the SPLA-In Opposition forces.
