Fifty-five victims of the fuel tanker explosion last month in Maridi, Western equatorial State, have been discharged from the Juba Teaching Hospital.

The oil tanker overturned in Mambe Payam and exploded, killing more than 200 and injuring several others. They were trying to salvage the fuel.

Most of the victims were admitted to Maridi Hospital, and more than 60 others with severe injuries were flown to Juba and admitted to Juba Teaching Hospital.

The Medical Director for Accidents and Emergency, Dr Abraham Adut Abednego, said three of them died.

He said nine of the victims need reconstructive surgery.

“We are doing reconstructive surgery because they have sustained severe injuries to the blood vessels, the tendons, and the skin tissues,” Dr Adut told Eye Radio.
