A group of unknown armed men have looted 15 metric tons of food meant for Congolese and Nubian Refugees camping in Lasu Payam, says the Commission for Refugee Affairs in Yei River state.

It says a UNHCR truck transporting the food items was ambushed while on its way to the Payam last week.

However, it says people onboard were released unharmed.

Ndole Doromo Kumama, the Assistant Commissioner in the Commission, told Eye Radio that “the store is empty with no food and the dispensary is empty with no medicine for the sick patients particularly to those with HIV/AIDS. There is only one nurse working 24 hours. We appeal for safe passage to the relief and humanitarian workers,” emphasizing the emergency of situation of the refugees.

There are over 10,000 Congolese refugees settled in Lasu Payam. They fled the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgencies to the area.
