Gov’t asks divided SPLM-IO to unite

The government has called on the SPLM-IN Opposition to solve differences within the party to enable the implementation of the peace agreement.

Some members of the opposition had split from the group before the signing of the peace agreement last month.

Changson Chang, former minister of Youth and Sports, is the leader of breakaway group now calling itself Federal Democratic Party (FDP).

The group’s military wing, South Sudan Army Forces, is headed by Gen Peter Gatdet. Both Chang and Gatdet were senior members of the SPLM-IO led by Dr Riek Machar.

They accused Dr. Riek Machar of fighting for his return to government as vice president and working for reunification of SPLM, and also failing to address the root cause of the conflict.

The government fears that the split is a threat to the country’s security.

Micheal Makuei Lueth, Information minister cum government spokesperson, says Opposition leader Dr Riek Machar should meet with the members to ensure there is no violation of the agreement.

“Those who broke away from the SPLM- IO are threatening and they are saying if they are not recognized and they don’t sit with the government and renegotiate, they will continue to fight both opposition and the government,” Mr Makuei told the Dawn show.

Mr. Makuei urged all the parties to cooperate in the implementation of the peace agreement in signed in August.
