Flash floods displaced more than 50,000 people in Nasir County of Upper Nile state, and the authority is now appealing to humanitarian agencies for emergency intervention.

Commissioner Nasir County, Duol Kun Thian told Eye Radio, the flooding which covers the entire county has displaced thousands of his citizens.

He attributes the situation to the persistent torrential rainfall causing the Nile River to burst its bank and flow into villages.

Kun says some of those displaced in Nasir town are sheltering with him at the main hospital, while others have moved to higher grounds and government facilities.

He said the flood-affected victims lack food, shelter, and medicines.

“The area is submerged by flood water, and over 50,000 people have been displaced. Nasir town has been submerged by water, we [county government] now evacuated to Nasir hospital, which is a bit higher,” said the commissioner of Nasir.

“The water is coming from the river and also the rains, we need help and assistance from the national government and humanitarian agencies, and we could be evacuated.”

Last month, the government declared a national emergency in flood affected areas and contracted logistic companies to supply relief items to the displaced and stranded populations.

It is not yet known whether the food supplies have reached the affected communities.
