The UN Mission in South Sudan says it has closed its site that sheltered foreign nationals who fled due to the fighting between the government and the opposition.

The mission says more than 500 foreign IDPs sought shelter at the UNMISS camps since December 2013.

It says most of them are from Ethiopia, Somalia and Eritrea. More than 200 agreed to move away and were transferred to another location in Yambio, Western Equatoria.

UNMISS said those who were reluctant to leave had to do so when the deadline expired on Monday.

“We advised them that the sites will be closed definitively on Monday September 7th, and all the 233 left peacefully,” spokesperson of UNMISS Joseph Contreras said.

“And we are now surveying the property for any items buried items such as weapons, illicit items, and then we will prepare the site for other purposes.”
