The King of Chollo tribe in the Upper Nile State has declared February 25th a Chollo Culture and Unity Day.
According to His Majesty Reth Kwongo Dak, the day when he honored President Salva Kiir “for his efforts to bring lasting peace” is now a public holiday in his realm.
On February 25, 2023, members of the Chollo community assembled at Dr John Garang Mausoleum to honor President Kiir for his peace efforts.
While addressing the gathering, the King had thanked Kiir for saving his life by ordering his evacuation to Juba, as deadly communal violence tore through northern Upper Nile.
“I, Reth Kwongo Dak Padiet, Reth of Chollo Kingdom declare the day of 25th February as Chollo Culture and Unity Day and shall be celebrated annually worldwide,” read the King’s statement dated April 1st.
The traditional leader said the day was historical as tribesmen and women had displayed their culture, unity and respect their leadership to the world.
