China offers South Sudan a $20 million grant

The government has signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the People’s Republic of China, in which the Chinese government will provide South Sudan a grant of more than $20 million.

The Chinese Embassy says the grand will strengthen the economic, trade and financial ties between the two countries.

Since the conflict erupted, more than 3.8 million South Sudanese people have been displaced and nearly 1 million civilians are facing famine, according to the United Nations.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation, Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin, says the grand will be used for supporting people who are affected by the current crisis.

Ma Qiang, Ambassador of People’s Republic of China to South Sudan, said some of the money will be directed to agricultural Projects.

“Food is the paramount necessity of the people,” Amb Qiang stressed.  “I think the top priority should be put to agriculture project so as to ease a food shortage in South Sudan.”

The Chinese ambassador has also urged the government and the SPLM in Opposition to bring peace and stability to the South Sudan.
