Civil society group CEPO says they may terminate their developmental activities planned for Western Bahr el Ghazal for the coming year over detention of activists there.

Last week, state authorities arrested 13 civil society activists from different organizations after they petitioned the government on the security situation in the state.

The authorities said the group had an agenda of destabilizing security in the state. The rest have been released, but two others are still under detention.

CEPO says the petition was not challenged the state government, but to notify it about the security concerns.

The Executive Director of CEPO, Edmond Yakani, says three others were released over the weekend and two are still in custody in Wau.

He says most of the activities were planned in collaboration with the state government, and others, with partner organizations for the year 2016.

“But if the situation continues like this, then we may resolve to either terminate our activities or transfer these activities to another state where we have collaboration,” Mr Yakani told Eye Radio.

He says the two individuals still in detention are: Steven Robo, the Western Bahr El Ghazal state Director of CEPO, and Arkanjelo, a member of a youth organization.
