The Council of Ministers has adopted a resolution to establish the judicial reform committee, following a presentation by the Minister of Justice on Friday.

According to the document read out by Justice Minister Ruben Madol Arol, the committee members consist of two delegates from IGAD and ten others from parties to the unity government.

The secretaries will be selected from professional judges and lawyers.

The committee is tasked with reviewing relevant laws, advising on judicial reforms, and restructuring the Judiciary to enhance its effectiveness.

The cabinet also approved nearly a million US dollars as allowance for the national members, while IGAD will be responsible for the international staff.

“We approved the sum of 999,380 to help the committee in the performance of its function for the period of three months,” said Michael Makuei, Minister of Information and government spokesperson, after the cabinet meeting in Juba.

“But for the foreigners, it is the international community which is paying for their expenses but for the nationals, the government will handle that, the amount was approved and now ministry of finance will release that.”

Makuei did not however disclose the names of the committee.

But he said the two IGAD members are from Uganda and Kenya.
