The United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon, has proposed an arms embargo on South Sudan and targeted sanctions on those who impede the peace process.

The government says about 300 people were reportedly killed and more than 40,000 fled their homes since renewed fighting erupted in Juba on 7 July.

The internally displaced persons are now seeking shelters at UN compounds and churches in Juba.

In addition to an immediate imposition of arms embargo, Mr Ban said the UN Mission in South Sudan will be equipped with attacking helicopters and other means for protecting civilians.

He spoke to Al-Jazeera during the 27th Summit of the heads of state and governments of the African Union in the Rwandan capital, Kigali on Sunday.

South Sudan’s crisis was on the top of the agenda during the AU summit in Kigali over the weekend.

However, President Salva Kiir earlier said there were enough foreign troops already in the country working as peacekeepers in the UN Mission in South Sudan.

“What do you need more forces for, what will they come and do?” President Kiir told the media. “So we will not accept even a single soldier.”

There are over 12,000 peacekeepers under UNMISS.
