The Mayor of Bor Municipal Council Samuel Ateny has prohibited the brewing, selling, and consumption of alcoholic drinks.

Mayor Ateny also ordered for the restriction on sale of industrially processed alcoholic products across the state capital.

He said the order has been enforced to rescue some alcoholics, who spent most of their time and money drinking a cheap and domestically brewed wine.

Ateny also ordered all the bars in the town not to operate during week days in the morning hours except on weekends.

The mayor said he directed the security forces “to deal with people who make local brews and other types of alcohol including Uganda waragi.”

Early this year, the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) banned the sale of any 100-milliliter gins and spirits.

These include London, Star, Number One, Chief, and Royal gins.

The department of quality assurance and inspection said the government institution based its decision on the health effects of the drinks.

Several states including North Bar el Ghazal, Western Equatoria State, Lake State, and Central Equatoria state have also issued similar bans on some liquors, especially the affordable GIN family of alcohols.
