Avoid speculating on the downed UN chopper, media urged

The UNMISS acting spokesperson is urging the media to avoid speculations about the crash of the M-I-8 helicopter that was destined for Bentiu.

The helicopter was carrying cargo when it crashed in Rubkona, some 10 kilometers from Unity state’s capital, Bentiu.

Three crew members died and only one person survived the crash.

Patrick Morris says investigations are on-going and they might take time to study the causes of the crash.

He told Eye Radio’s Sundown Show that a vicinity report would be released after the investigations.

“At the moment all the speculation we are seeing in the media is speculation. People would like to jump into conclusion,” said Mr Morris.

The cargo MI-8 helicopter was carrying food.

“Experts are on the ground or were on the ground today,” he added.

“They are working very hard and it is a joint operation between the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authorities and UNMISS and we would get full picture of what happened and why this tragedy occurred as soon as possible and that information will be released as soon as possible.”

Unity State Minister of Information, Peter Makoth, had said earlier that the helicopter was shot down by the SPLA in Opposition forces.

However, the military spokesperson of the SPLA in Opposition, Brigadier-General, Lul Koang Rui, denied the accusation.
