Over 5,000 killed by earthquake in Turkey, Syria

Buildings across Turkey have collapsed as a result of the earthquakes. (EPA).

More than 5,000 deaths have now been confirmed across Turkey and Syria from the devastating earthquake that rocked the two countries.

Turkey’s death toll rose to at least 3,419 and another 20,534 have been wounded, the country’s vice-president Fuat Oktay said, according to the BBC.

Close to 6,000 buildings have also collapsed in Turkey.

In Syria, the death toll has risen to 1,602.

Turkey’s disaster and emergency management authority AFAD said in its latest update that over 24,400 emergency personnel are helping with search and rescue operations

There are concerns that freezing conditions could hamper rescue efforts.

International aid is being sent to the affected region from the UN, EU, Nato and the governments of the US, UK, China, Russia, India, Japan, Iraq, Iran, Australia, New Zealand, Greece, Pakistan, among others.

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD) is urging people to stay off the roads to help search and rescue efforts following the earthquake.
