Unqualified medical personnel to be prosecuted if found

The National Medical Council says it will review the qualifications of medical practitioners and certify the qualified ones.

The medical council is a regulatory body established last week to control medical practice in the country.

The Deputy Chairperson of the Council, Dr. Mayen Achiek, who is an Assistant Professor of Surgery, says the registration ensures that only the qualified personnel run clinics and pharmacies.

Dr. Mayen says the council will close down illegal clinics and prosecute and unqualified personnel practicing medicine if they are found.

“If we find someone announcing himself in radio like we used to listen, sometimes you hear doctor so and so coming from Rwanda or Nigeria or somewhere, the medical council has a right to prosecute,” Dr Achiek warned. “We can pursue you.”

Dr. Mayen says the council will protect the citizens from fake doctors and guide the qualified medical practitioners.
