Authorities in Nyamuruyang State are calling on humanitarian organizations to deliver food assistance to the people affected by hunger.

They say most of the people are on the verge of severe famine.

The State Governor says most of the counties have not received enough rain since the beginning of the year.

Louis Lobong Lojore there is also shortage of goods in the markets due to insecurity along Nimule-Torit and the Torit-Kapoeta roads.

He told Eye Radio that has written to the UN food agency, the national government and businessmen to intervene.

“We have talked to the business people to bring food in for sell although for almost now going to two years people have been buying, and depending on their livestock, selling them…. we believe if [insecurity] this year also continues the same people will not be able to export the stock of livestock and it will create a big problem,” Mr Lobong said.

“And Kenya has not been allowing any food to leave their country into South Sudan through border point of Nadapal and we only usually get some foods through Uganda or through Nimule but because of insecurity, that was actually in Imatong State, some business people also fear to travel.”

However, a report from the meteorological department in Juba says many parts of the country received better rainfall this year compared to last year.

The chairperson of the farmers union, Edward Kenyi Sworo also said people in the former Eastern Equatoria had gone into farming and would approach the end of the year with little food security issues.
