The main hospital in Jonglei has confirmed ten cases of HIV/AIDS among pregnant mothers over the last three days.

The women were among several others who went for maternity care at Bor Civil Hospital.

The supervisor of the Voluntary Counselling and Testing, Abraham Alier Dhel, says the number is too high to be recorded in just a few days.

“So we are dealing with cases that have come to the hospital such as referral cases sent from other places like in Duk, Twic East private clinics,” Mr Alier told Eye Radio.

He said the hospital was receiving 15 cases monthly last year. This was a sharp rise compared to two cases per month in 2014.

Security officials say there are many prostitutes in the town, who sometimes don’t use protectors.

The officials say they arrested more than 300 prostitutes in a crackdown on the business recently.

HIV is commonly spread through sexual contact with an infected partner. It can be prevented through abstinence, being faithful to one partner, or the use of condoms.
