At least 33 gang members have been sentenced to one year each in prison and a fine of one hundred thousand South Sudanese pounds in Jonglei State, the police said.

Bor Police Commissioner Major General Elia Costa said the unruly gang groups have been fighting among themselves and looting residential areas and markets.

General Elia Gosta said the group members including four girls were arrested on Tuesday and were each sentenced to a year in prison and a fine of 100 thousand SSP.

“The number we arrested the day before yesterday was about thirty-five, and the police are implementing the law so when we arrested them we opened a case against them and yesterday we took them to court then they were all sentenced,” Costa said.

He added that the court pardoned two people – a disabled and a minor.

General Costa said the police will be implementing a crackdown from time to time on gangs groups in the state.

“The court released them but the others were all taken to prison one year plus one hundred thousand fine. We are going to implement it from time to time until we confirm that the situation is normal people are free in their places”.
