At least 300 pupils abandoned a school in Kapoeta North County of Eastern Equatoria due to devastating hunger in the drought-prone area, according to the area Commissioner Emmanuel Lolimo.

Last Month, authorities in Kapoeta North County reported that thousands of locals migrated from the area due to severe hunger and drought.

The county official says in an inspection visit, his office found only 81 of the total 381 pupils at Choroi Primary School were attending classes with only two candidates.

The hunger-stricken children fled the area with their families in search of food in other counties.

“When they are moving out looking for food, they do not leave their children, they go together and that is affecting us, especially in enrollment of pupils in school .

“In one of the schools we visited, the enrolment before the hunger according to the record was 381 and last week when we went, it was 81 and imagine the top class which is primary seven is only 2 pupils”.

Mr Lomilo is appealing for emergency intervention to address the situation as it is affecting the education sector.

“The situation as we all know is a natural disaster which is affecting everybody,

“So my appeal is to the government is that there is need to come up with some intervention to address this situation that is affecting the learners and the education sector, he added.
