Over 200 primary school teachers from the 10 states have completed a two-week literacy training in Yei County, Central Equatoria State.

Speaking at the closing of the training, the National Minister of Education, Dr. John Gai, said the ministry is committed to reduce the rate of illiteracy in the country by the year 2025.

He said the ministry is also committed to achieve an educated society in South Sudan by the year 2040.

“I would like to say that for us in South Sudan, our mandate is to change the education system through eradicating illiteracy by 2025,” Dr Gai told the gathering.

“That cannot be done by the minister, by the president; not by anybody, but done by teachers.

“So, that makes teaching job to be the most critical job in the Republic of South Sudan.”

The training was organized by the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization, UNESCO.
