Kapoeta South Mayor has started the construction of a meat market to improve food safety and protect people from disease.

According to Elia Lokuda, the Mayor of Kapoeta Municipal Council, the meat market which is constructed by a local company is expected to finish in two months.

The Mayor says the initiative is prompted by the high consumption of meat in Kapoeta.

“Construction has already started and the work is progressing. The market is being constructed at the central market of Kopeta Town in the municipality of Kapoeta,” said Lokud.

“People of Kapoeta are Agro-pastoralists and most of their life depends on livestock which means they depend on milk and meat.”

Mayor Lokud also cited the unhygienic slaughtering of animals in the market.

“The consumption of meat is so high in Kapoeta and people have been getting these services of meat being slaughtered and sold in areas that are not hygienic,

“The construction of this facility is going to change the life of the people of Kapoeta healthy wise”.

The project is funded by Food and Agriculture Organization in collaboration with the Kapoeta Municipal Administration.
