There is still a threat of hunger in the country, the United Nations Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs in South Sudan has said.

Toby Lanzer says most of the people in the areas affected by the conflict have nothing to harvest this year.

“Despite the fact this is the time of harvest, there are quite as many people who are severely food insecure, twice as many as would normally be the case,” Mr Lanzer stated.

“As we are going to the dry season, there are fears that there will be more violence, there are fears and the lean season will grow harder.”

He said they working to contain the food situation.

“This is something we will be watching very closely; we will work with the authorities of this country to monitor the situation and do everything we possibly can to reach as many people in need.”

UN deputy humanitarian chief Kyung-Wha Kang announced earlier that aid agencies need additional funding of $600 million to start next year’s humanitarian operations in South Sudan.

Over one million people have fled their homes and are displaced within the country and over 450,000 have fled to neighboring countries, according to humanitarian agencies.
