Passports with new security features to be introduced

The Director for the Department of Immigration, Nationality and Passports says passports with new security features will be introduced next year for those replacing their passports.

The newly designed passports will include coded security features that will likely make it difficult to forge.

the Immigration Department’s DG, Lt General Majak Akech said the new features will be enhanced to ensure the passports are not used for crime related purposes.

“We have checked that anything [feature] which is not included has to be included. We want to add more security features because crimes involving the use of passports are increasing across the world,” Akech said.

He said the new passport will retain the current form, but with more unique display of authenticity.

“This passport is going to be the same but better than the one we have right now. We are going to produce new ones from the New Year of 2017 up to 2018,” he added.

In 2012, South Sudan introduced its official passports and identity cards. The passports were officially launched by President Salva Kiir in Juba.

According to the 2012 Visa Restrictions Index, South Sudan´s passport allows its carrier to enter 38 countries around the world without the need of previous visa arrangements.

It is ranked number 95 in freedom of movement table.
