The media freedom campaigners, Reporters Without Borders have called for an investigation into the killing of journalist Isaac Vuni.

The body of Mr. Vuni was found dumped by the road side in Kerepi, a village along the Juba-Nimule highway, four months after abduction.

The Association for Media Development in South Sudan said the late journalist had reported being followed by ‘unknown people’ before he was killed.

The Reporters Without Borders say it was appalled to learn of the death of Mr. Vuni and said South Sudanese authorities should shed all possible light on his murder.

The head of the campaign group’s Africa desk, Cléa Kahn Sriber, said there was silence at the time of Mr Vuni’s abduction.

“We condemn Isaac Vuni’s foul murder and call on the authorities to conduct an investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice,” said Cléa Kahn Sriber., the head of
RSF’s Africa desk.

“The authorities distinguished themselves by their silence at the time of his abduction. Their silence cannot continue. They must put an end to the widespread impunity prevailing in South Sudan, which makes this kind of abuse possible,” according to a statement. Government officials are yet to comment.

The wife of Mr Vuni has been quoted by the media as saying that youth found her husband’s body at the edge of a farm just by the roadside; she did not even know where the body was buried.

No arrests have been reported over the killing.

Mr Cléa said there must be an end to what they see as ‘widespread impunity in South Sudan.’
