Kakuma, Dadaab face food ration cuts

The World Food Program says it has been forced to cut food rations for refugees, including South Sudanese, in Kakuma and Dadaab in Kenya due to shortage of funding.

The agency says it is rapidly running out of resources to feed some 400,000 refugees in the two camps and in Kalobeyei settlement.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, there are more than 90,000 South Sudanese refugees who fled to Kenya since December 2013.

They are among many others facing a cut of food ration.

The World Food Program says it was forced to cut the ration to half, but even with this reduction, the food currently available will only last until the end of February.

“We are appealing to donors to quickly come to the aid of the refugees, who rely on WFP food assistance for survival,” said Annalisa Conte, WFP’s Representative and Country Director for Kenya.

“WFP immediately requires US$13.7 million to cover the food and cash needs for the refugees between December and April.”

The WFP said refugees in Dadaab and Kakuma camps monthly receive cereals, vegetable oil, and flour.

It also provides a cash transfer that allows refugees to buy fresh food products from local markets.
