The South Sudan Youth Constitution Review Working Group has welcomed the passing of the constitution-making process and called for its immediate approval by the president.

The bill was re-tabled before the August house yesterday and was subsequently passed by the lawmakers.

According to the Revitalized Peace Agreement, the bill – once assented to by the President – will permit the reconstitution of the National Constitutional Review Commission and the appointment of members to the Sub-Committee.

It will also pave way for the conduct of public consultations, civic education, and the formulation of a permanent constitution for the country.

The group’s secretary-general, Savior Tombe appealed to President Kiir to promptly sign the bill into law to expedite the constitution-making process.

“We are so happy that our government has prioritized this bill and it should not just end by passing. We believe that now that the parliament has done its work, we now request that the president signs this bill as soon as possible so that the parties to the agreement can now be able to send their representatives to the NCRC”.

Tombe also calls on the unity government, stakeholders to the peace agreement, and guarantors to avail funding for smooth implementation of the constitution-making process.

“I request that the government starts showing commitment by providing funding for the constitution-making process, that is when the NCRC is reconstituted, immediately we should hear that the government has given.”
