Yei authorities plan to set up a new market in Otogo payam

The Commissioner of Yei River County says they are planning to set up a new rural market in Otogo Payam outside the town in order to de-congest the main market.

The old market has not been demarcated and there is no proper drainage and waste disposal systems, posing health hazards to the residents.

Last week, traders from Ombasi complained to the authorities to improve the structure of the market in order to prevent outbreak of diseases such as cholera.

Commissioner David Juma Augustine told Eye Radio that the team is already working to improve Mugwo market and the next target will be Ombasi market.

“In the next four days, they will finish Mugwo and possibly they will move to Ombasi as a next destination,” said Mr Juma.

The market is adjacent to Ombasi Primary School. The head teacher says Yei residents have been worried about improper disposal of garbage by vendors.

Taban Emmanuel told Eye Radio that traders are now trying their best to clean the market.

“What I have seen is: there is pollution in the market. The environment is not so good but last week traders struggle to clean the environment. Currently there is slight improvement,” he said.

Ombasi market is one of the markets that supply Yei and the entire Central Equatoria State with food.
