Health authorities in Western Equatoria State said an expectant mother died from unattended labor complications at a hospital in Yambio, days after the only maternity ward at the facility was shutdown due to funding shortage.

According to information from the family, the deceased whose name is Victoria Mihipai, passed away in the evening hours due to loss of blood after giving birth.

Victoria is survived by five children.

Her death comes after the State Health Authorities partially shut down Yambio Hospital maternity ward earlier on Tuesday as the facility struggles with a funding crisis.

Speaking to Eye Radio on Sunday, Western Equatoria State Minister of Health, James Abdallah, confirmed the passing of the young woman.

He said the incident is partly due to a lack of drugs and manpower challenges.

“The death of a woman is due to lack of drugs, manpower, and lack of support. The situation of Yambio Hospital Administration is facing great challenges and that’s why I presented last time,” said Abdallah.

The hospital was among dozens of primary healthcare units in the country that were supported by the departing Health Pool Fund.

In August last year, donor countries consisting of some European Union member states withdrew from the project, leaving most health facilities in shambles.

Since then, most primary healthcare units started experiencing shortfalls including the Yambio Civil Hospital.

On Monday, Western Equatoria State Minister of Health appealed to the national government to intervene saying there is no adequate support from the state government after the maternity wards were partially shut.
