Man arrested for kidnapping stepson, demanding $450 ransom from wife

Kenya Police have arrested a man on accusation charges of kidnapping his 8-year-old stepson to extort money from his wife after a domestic disagreement.

According to the local media, the suspect identified as Nemwel Ondari, 32, was arrested on Saturday afternoon at a bus park – hours after the boy’s mother filed a report at Embakasi police station.

Everline Nandera, the mother of the hostage reportedly told detectives that she had left their home in Embakasi’s Tel Aviv area early morning for Muthurwa market where upon return at around 9:20 am, she found her husband and son missing.

“A note had been left behind by the husband, demanding for a ransom of Ksh. 50,000, for the release of the boy. In the note, the man also warned his wife that he would kill the boy using a kitchen knife which he had carried, should she try any monkey business,” police told Citizen Digital.

It is understood that the couple had a heated argument the previous night.

After Everline left on Saturday morning to work for the family, the had packed his clothes and a kitchen knife before taking off with the boy.

He was then tracked down to the Nairobi city bus stage.

“The detectives pounced on the man at around 4 pm, as he eagerly waited for the ransom to be deposited into his Mpesa account,” police added.

The mother and child were reunited and the man is meanwhile held at Embakasi police station awaiting arraignment.
