Why ICT expert Eva Yayi mentors school girls in digital field

Information communication technology is being immersed in people’s daily lives at an increasingly younger age globally- something innovator like Eva Yayi has taken upon herself to inspire young South Sudanese women to catch up with the advancing digital era.

Yayi graduated in computer science from Uganda Christian University and later obtained a Master of Science in Information Systems with a specialization in ICT4D Innovation from Kobe Institute of Computing, Japan.

“Technology is fun, and I will never get tired of it. I love being at the front of creating impact with my knowledge and mentoring young girls and women to be like me.”

A founder of the GoGirls ICT Imitative in Juba, Yayi is reaching out to numerous students to embrace sciences and particularly digital technology to equip themselves with modern ICT skills.

The initiative founded in 2019 involving weekend mentorship and meet-ups, draws together university female students to professionals already working in the technological field.

Focusing on information systems, ICT4D innovation, hacktivism, and peace-building is dedicated to young women.

“These activities were aimed at encouraging female students to participate actively and to inspire them to aim for success so that they could join the technology career fields,

‘Fewer girls were engaging in class discussions and their academic performance was not as good as that of their male counterparts.”

ICT is perceived as one of the difficult disciplines to pursue, but Yayi says this course comes with price, determination, and zeal to learn.

ICT provides job opportunities in Electronic-commerce, Cybersecurity, and technology policy

She is now encouraging parents and to communities support their daughters who choose to take technology as their career path.

Yayi’s does not only hold mentorship in person but also avails simplified learning materials online.

“GoGirls ICT Initiative has a lot of training opportunities that we publish online, and these are free of charge,” she said.

This year International Women’s Day focuses on innovation and technology to celebrate women’s contribution to Innovation and Technology with the aim to achieve Gender equality.

In his remark on the day, the says it is committed to achieving gender equality in all spheres of life, including innovation and technology in South Sudan.
