What renown late Malakal pastor Nyawelo will be remembered for

The renowned pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Malakal, Upper Nile State who died at the weekend was on Tuesday laid to rest at the church premises.

Samuel Nyawelo Ador passed away on Friday evening,  June 1st, 2023, after a long illness.

He was 88 years old.

Born on January 1, 1935, in Kwogo village, in Malakal, the late began his studies at Falu Village School in 1953, before attending Duleib Hill School from 1954 to 1956, and Maridi Intermediate School from 1957 to 1960.

He later obtained a bachelor’s degree in theology from the Evangelical College of Theology between 1960 and 1965.

During his career, Pastor Nyawelo received church training from Pastor Adok Mayom before pursuing a master’s degree in theological studies at the American University in Lebanon between 1972 and 1974.

Upon his return to Sudan, he was appointed as a teacher and was eventually promoted to the rank of general inspector of religious education curricula in the Greater Upper Nile region in the late 1970s.

The late also studied for a master’s degree in comparative religions at the University of Birmingham, Britain, specializing in Christianity and Islam.

After returning to Sudan, he joined the Office of Religious Affairs in the Greater Upper Nile.

In 1987, he joined the Sudanese Council of Churches and was appointed director of the Department of Churches and Society, working to develop church relations at local and international levels.

Some of his most notable achievements included unifying all churches under the Council of Sudanese Churches, coordinating conferences on how to confront Islamic proselytizing, and initiating the Council for Religious Coexistence between Christianity and Islam.

Pastor Nyawelo’s contributions also extended to the development of Christian education curricula in secondary and basic schools in Sudan, the establishment of Bible exhibitions and youth conferences, and providing theological scholarships in the Arab Republic of Egypt.

At the time, he was a pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Khartoum where he established subsidiary churches in Khartoum, Khartoum North, and Omdurman.

He remained an active member and contributor to the Sudanese Presbyterian Churches throughout his life.

Internationally, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the World Alliance Reformed Churches, based in Geneva, from 1989 to 1997, and Vice President of the Spiritual Company of the Middle East Reformed Churches Fellowship.

He also contributed to the establishment of the World Council of Reformed Churches in Nairobi in 1970 and gave lectures at numerous church conferences around the world.

Pastor Nyawelo is survived by his wife, seven children; four sons and three daughters, and several grandchildren.

He was a revered member of the community and would be deeply missed.
