WFP: Insecurity in equatoria hinders relief delivery

Author : | Published: Tuesday, January 26, 2016

Insecurity in Equatoria is hindering the delivery of food to the northern part of the country ahead of the rainy season, says the World Food Program.

The agency’s spokesperson, George Fominyen, says food used to be transported through what was known as Western Equatoria to the Bhar al-Ghazal region.

But there have been reports of clashes between the government troops and opposition forces commonly known as the arrow boys.

Mr Forminyen says the agency is unable to deliver the required amount of food due to this insecurity.

“In some of these areas in the equatoria, you may have noticed that there is a growing level of insecurity which makes it quite challenging for the movement of these trucks,” said the WFP spokesperson.

Mr. Forminyen the WFP has to ensure that 25 thousands metric tons each month, goes through the former Western Equatoria and Western Bahar Elghzal, Northern Bahar Elghazal, up to the former Unity state.

“This year WFP has to plan to preposition about 100 thousands metric tons of food. Move this food into areas where we can keep it ahead of the rainy season,” said Forminyen.

“Now that’s about 800 trucks a month, moving through, but with growing insecurity it is becoming a bit hard.”

UN figures indicate that thousands of IDPs in the northern part of the country face hunger.
