Western nations welcome the AU report

Author : | Published: Friday, October 30, 2015

The European Union, the United States and other western countries have welcomed the report of the African Union Commission of Inquiry into the South Sudan conflict.

They say the report is serious and its findings and recommendations should be taken into account in the peace process.

The report says gross human right violations and abuses, including brutal killings, rape and torture, were committed by both parties to the conflict.

The western diplomats say widespread human rights violations against civilians are appalling and warn that continuous violations of ceasefire commitments are being disobeyed.

They say accountability for the crimes committed in the conflict and reconciliation are essential in laying the foundation for sustainable peace in South Sudan.

The diplomats that jointly issued the statement include the Heads of Mission of Denmark, France, Germany and Italy.

Others include those from the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Heads of Mission of Canada, Norway and Switzerland are also part of the joint statement.
