Germany assigns new ambassador to South Sudan as Kiir accredits Brökelmann

President Salva Kiir has accredited a new German ambassador, with Eye Radio learning of the appointment through a press release issued after the accreditation ceremony.

The head of sate formally received the letters of credence of Ambassador Sebastian Brökelmann on Monday at the State House in Juba.

The appointment of Sebastian Brökelmann as Germany’s new ambassador to South Sudan had not previously been publicly reported.

The diplomater replaced his predecessor Gregory Bledjian who had served since 2025.

In a statement to Eye Radio newsroom, Ambassador Brökelmann said Germany will continue to support South Sudan, with security, stability and the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement among its key priorities.

The new envoy said Germany’s engagement will continue to focus on security and stability, as well as humanitarian and development assistance for the South Sudanese people.

He identified implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, or R-ARCSS, as Germany’s main political priority.

He said this requires what he described as authentic inter-party dialogue involving all signatories and other stakeholders, including civil society.

The German ambassador also called for continued judicial, security and economic reforms.

He said judicial reforms are needed towards a permanent constitution, while security sector reforms should focus on unifying military forces and creating an environment conducive for citizens to exercise their democratic rights.

On the economy, Brökelmann said reforms should strengthen public financial management, including the fight against corruption.

He pledged to work to strengthen bilateral relations between Germany and South Sudan during his tenure.

The ambassador said Germany will continue to support South Sudan on its path toward sustainable peace, security, democracy, the rule of law and prosperity.
