Warring parties must account for crimes committed – the church

Author : | Published: Saturday, June 27, 2015

The warring parties must be held accountable for the crimes alleged committed during the conflict, the South Sudan Council of Churches has said.

The General-Secretary of the Council, Father James Oyet Latansio, says the people can forgive those who have committed atrocities only when they account for their mistakes.

“Anybody who has committed crimes must be accountable for his mistakes,” Father Latansio said.

“If it means he or she confesses and open their hearts to the people of South Sudan, the people of South Sudan will also respond to them that yes we forgive you.”

Father Oyet also said the Council welcomes the reinstatement of Mr. Pagan Amum as SPLM Secretary-General.

He says them move is a positive step towards lasting peace in South Sudan.

Mr Pagan made a similar call for accountability after he took oath of office this week.
